Vintage Set of Ridgway Oriental Blue Transferware Plates, 10 inches. No chips, cracks, or crazing; some light scratches. Each plate is marked with a number and other marks on the back (see photos).
These plates are a type of English pottery known for its distinctive blue and white printed design. Made by the Ridgway family, a prominent Staffordshire pottery in North Staffordshire, England, the "Oriental" pattern was first introduced in the 1830s. The mark with "England" indicates production after 1891.
The "Oriental" pattern typically features a central scene with oriental architecture, landscapes, and figures, often including details like pagodas, gardens, palm trees, and sometimes camels. The border is frequently decorated with floral arrangements and architectural elements within cartouches, and the edges are scalloped with gold trim. These plates are made of earthenware and are antique collectibles, often dating to the late 19th or early 20th century (between 1891 and 1920 based on the England mark). Old, rare, and hard to find.
