Life Transition Support & Autonomous Living

In Mauritius, there is a significant gap in structured support for individuals who acquire disabilities later in life.

FMMH addresses this through a holistic program that promotes autonomy and independence:

  • Psychological Support: Individual counselling, trauma recovery therapy, and emotional adjustment for newly disabled individuals.
  • Group Therapy: Peer support spaces for sharing experiences, especially for
accident survivors and those with degenerative conditions.
  • Rehabilitation & Physiotherapy: Personalised therapy plans to improve mobility and regain physical strength.
  • Mobility & Orientation Training:
  1. White cane mobility training for the blind.
  2. Wheelchair navigation and strategic usage for paraplegics and quadriplegics.
  • Independent Living Skills:
  1. Cooking, nutrition, and home management classes.
  2. Financial literacy and budgeting workshops.
  3. Personal grooming, hygiene, and self-care training.
  • Support for Developmental & Intellectual Disabilities: Life skills programs that focus on communication, routine planning, social behaviour, and safety.
  • Access Facilitation: Help with navigating public transport, healthcare systems, social aid, and other vital services for living independently.
